Eli5: Why do humans have nails?

Nails are what happens when an animal used to have claws, but hasn’t really needed them to survive for thousands of years, so they’re starting to disappear.
Just like our coccyxes are vestigial tails, and our appendix is a vestigial stomach (I think), our nails are vestigial claws.
