eli5: Why do humans who drink contaminated water like from rivers get sick, while wild animals drinking from the same source don’t?

Nature is not perfect, it’s just good enough.
So long as you live long enough to spawn then your purpose is served, any extra is a bonus.
As others have said, not everywhere is contaminated, but nature is not kind, animals die of something, old age is rarely it.
