because they have a large following that they can literally influence into buying something. a company will either send them a product for free in hopes that the influencer will like it enough to mention it to their followers, or the company sends the products for free *and* pays the influencer to mention it to their followers.
it is marketing and influencer marketing is very effective because it’s marketing that doesn’t really *feel* like marketing. often subscribers connect with their favorite influencer on what they feel is a personal level and consider that influencer to be a “friend.” we are more open to trusting suggestions from friends, especially when they haven’t told us that they are being paid for it*.
*it is against the law for an influencer to not disclose that with their viewers, but it is very tough to regulate.
