Citrus fruits have segments because the ovary of their flowers is classified as multi-locule. A locule is an ovary chamber in a flowering plant and each locule contains a separate group of seeds.

Or, to make it a little for 5 year oldish: better possibility of seed dispersal.

The fruits of plants are like female Gonads or ovaries. The mandarin fruits just happen to be in segments probably to help seeds distribute when they fall off and sink into the ground

It is to help the distribution of the mandarin seeds when they fall off, most citrus fruits do have the same mechanic.
