Eli5, why do Mason jar lids typically come in 2 parts, threads and seal, as opposed to nearly every other commonly used household container?

Actually in my country the lid is one piece, is either screw on or uses a weird press contraption to get on and if you want to reuse it, you need to boil it before use. That sterilises it and softens the rubber. Once the rubber changes color and/or the lid cracks, you toss it and use new one, but you can safely get 5-10 years of use of a lid.

Also, to open the jar, you have to leverage a knife tip under the edge of the lid to let some air in, otherwise it will literally not budge.
