eli5: why do most sign up pages require you to confirm your password?

It’s to reduce the number of times you have to change your password because you *thought* you typed it right, but maybe missed a letter/character. When you enter it twice, the chances of a typo are reduced drastically.
To make sure you didn’t mistype your password. Since you can’t see it it’s easy to not notice but you’re unlikely to make the same typo twice.
