Its likely to make people feel like they are getting a discount when that is just the base price.

Imagine in a store they sell apples for 1 money and they dont sell that well. So instead they say it costs two money but they are 50% off, this makes your brain go damn thats a really good deal.

Normal stores do this aswel just less frequently.

Source i work for an e-sports company and the chief wanted to do this with some of the merch for this exact reason.
