Usually you’d see this in prey species, like butterflies; who imitate the face of an owl or something. But for some reason orcas have these giant fake eyes next to their real eyes. Why? This has actually bugged me since I was little.

No one knows for sure, because it’s not like evolution left behind patch notes on why certain adaptations exist.
The most popular theory is that it’s intended to fake out the orca’s prey. Prey animals will often go for the eyes of their predators, in order to blind the predator and allow them to escape, so the eyespot is kind of a “fake eye.”
