Eli5 why do pandas only eat bamboo when they are able to digest meat efficiently?

Well they don’t seem like they’d be very good at hunting, lol. If it’s sufficient to support their lifestyle.

Bamboo is enough. And bamboo neither runs away nor fights back. Saving energy is a winning move for many animals.

Visual point of view, Personal preference and laziness. Caws like to eat squrels if they unlucky enogh to be bear their mouse. Horses like to bite of and chew fingers etc.

Over time, their traits started changing; once able to *taste* meat, they no longer have the umami receptors (taste buds specialized to sense meaty, savory flavors). So, bamboo tastes good, and they have no interest in meat.
