Eli5: why do people say Mayo is unhealthy?

1.77K viewsOther

Hey everyone.. maybe this is a dumb question, but recently I’ve been wondering why people hate Mayo and say it’s so unhealthy!

Like isn’t it just.. eggs, oil, and seasoning?

Those are all things that to their own extents aren’t considered unhealthy when being looked individually, so why is it that when put together to create Mayo, they suddenly create something unhealthy?

I know Mayo is considered a fat, but I didn’t think it was THAT bad? And aren’t there healthy fats as well?

Its fine in small portions but its kinda like taking a bite of butter or drinking canola oil. Tons of calories and unhealthy fats to take in all at once.

Yes there are healthy fats, but there’s a difference between avacados and mayo.

Just to add some spice to what others explained already:
You can get unhealthy by overeating healthy food.

Fat is good for you, but the type of fat matters. Mayo is often made with canola / rapeseed oil, which is high in linoleic acid, which increases inflammation in your body.

If you must eat Mayo, find the kind made with olive oil.

Mayo or mayo? Mayo is a medical institution & sounds pretty healthy. One the other hand mayo is probably not so healthy.

Its the oil, so many calories, all fat…. Its a lot of calories for just a little amount of product. Usually people use a ton of mayo.

Just a quick Google search shows its 680 calories in just 100 grams of mayo.

I mean, think of it like drinking a milk shake…. But probably 2x as unhealthy.

Its just a great way to become a fat person.

But delicious.

It’s incredibly calorie-dense but no more than something like ice cream. And it’s not like you usually eat mayo with a spoon. The actual components don’t have any well-defined bad effects on human health.

As a bonus, I have never heard any person call out mayo as an unhealthy food. Not doubting you at all, but I wanted to say your experience may not be universal. And I guess mine isn’t either.

Mayo recipe:

2 egg yolks

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

250ml sunflower oil

2 tsp white wine vinegar or lemon juice

I suppose you’re highly underestimating the amount of fat that’s in there. Egg yolks are also full of fat and cholesterol. Then you add 2,5dl oil to that… It’s basically just fat mixed with… fat.

Mayo is some liquid, emulsifiers found in egg yolk, water, and what a lot of people are forgetting, a lot of air.

So even though mayo is close to 100% fat it isn’t as calorific as oil. You can use quite a bit of mayo (especially home made) without thinking you’ve just dumped pure vegetable oil in your sandwich.

Because it’s unhealthy. It’s very fatty, and has a lot of calories. Each spoonful has about 100 calories.

Mayo only becomes unhealthy, when:
1. You eat a boatload in 1 sitting.
2. It’s not just (organic, free-range, cage-free, non-GMO) eggs, (non-seed) oil and (natural) seasoning.
