Eli5: why do people use the term Middle class instead of Working class?

Isn’t middle simply confusing?

Are we not working folks and wealthy-ruling folks that generate wealth via assets?

Edit: thank you all who’ve helped me gain a better understand of the concept from many different angles

Because those are literally two different classes. The working class is the lower class. The middle class is the class between that and the wealthy upper class.

I’m working class and proud of it. I live in a working class suburb. All my friends are working class. We couldn’t be happier. We appreciate what we have and what we don’t have only makes us stronger.

Most people in the upper class also work.

Working class just sounds nicer than lower class. It isn’t implying that those are the only ones who do any work

Because being part of the “working class” when you get to choose a job that is tolerable (sometimes even pleasant), and never stress about lacking money for essential stuff (in the worst case you’ll have to limit your travels during your 2 months of holidays) is not the same experience as being “working class” and stressing about your payment being rejected when you go to buy basic food because you’re underpaid.

Because Society consists generally of Lower (Working) class, Middle Class (white collar workers) and so called upper class consisting of greedy fuckers with their head buried in the trough.

The distinction is simply separating workers who work with their hands versus workers who work with their brain.

At least in the US, working class has the implication that someone does physical labor instead of just an office job.

Middle class tend to “have careers” rather than “work”. It’s, vaguely, the difference between “blue-collar” and “white-collar” .
