eli5: Why do regular batteries last for so long whereas rechargeable ones have to be recharged so frequently?

I used to have rechargable battery packs for my xbox controllers but it was just horrendous. I wanted to be more environmentally friendly but duracell AA batteries last forever even if I’m binge gaming. The rechargable ones would wear out irritatingly quickly. I never understood and it caused my game actions to lag so I gave up on them
