The intriguing thing is why they choose soldiers rather than other occupation like a scientist, a model, a businessman or a doctor which could theorically attract a wider range of victims?

Just a theory here… scientists, doctors or businessmen could easily be verified online with a name search. Members of the military don’t have “employee-based” websites.
For instance, you couldn’t look up at navy.mil to see if Joe schmoe was a sailor on a ship, but you could check with the AMA to see the credentials of Dr. Joe Schmoe.
