All batteries work on the principle of having a charged particle (**ions**) moving from one end (**electrode**) to another through a substance called an electrolyte.

In rechargable lithium ion batteries, if the battery gets too hot, this electrolyte can turn into a gas causing the puffing.

It’s bad because it’s a sign the battery isn’t being used correctly (overheating) and the deformed battery can damage the components.
