eli5 Why do some cars rust?

Why do some cars rust and others don’t? I realise that every car will probably develop rust at some stage but excluding environmental factor, why does it happen to some more quickly that others?

Cheaper materials?
Improperly treated materials?
Cheap paint used?

Lots of factors environment, how well the car is maintained, materials used. A car will do better in a place like Southern California than say Toronto. One thing that can really cause a car to rust is if you live somewhere that puts salt on the roads for snow/ice during the winter.
