eli5: Why do some ingredients on food packaging have crosses at the top?

I’ve always seen tiny crosses on food ingredients/minerals but never knew what they meant (also the reason why I flaired this post as “other”, not sure if it’s considered economics).

Tiny crosses? Like footnote indicators?

You know how you use * to add a footnote/disclaimer kind of thing?

Sometimes people use several *s in a row if they have several footnotes, sometimes they use * † ‡ as it’s easier to recognise which is which at a glance

It’s like an asterisk. It means “there’s another one of these marks somewhere; find it and read what it says”.

They’re often called “daggers”.
