Everyone has a part of their brain that helps them focus. For people with ADHD, that part of their brain is asleep. Stimulants wake up that part of their brain so they can focus like normal people.

Just to dumb it down further

Imagine you are constantly starved for food. You would be constantly doing things to satisfy your hunger.

People with ADHD are starved for stimulation (dopamine) and are motivated to find things that stimulate them (being hyper, impatient, and not calm. Giving them a stimulant is like feeding a hungry man and letting them focus on other less immediate needs

ADHD person: attention is EVERYWHERE. Brain constantly requires fresh stimulation, because it has naturally lower dopamine.

Stimulant: gives dopamine.

Brain: wow thanks bro finally I can stop looking for a new distraction every 5 seconds because i now have that dopamine
