eli5 – Why do the storms that start in central America loose steam before reaching Asia?

If you look at all these curves you’ll notice a pattern. They curve right in the Northern Hemisphere and Left in the Southern Hemisphere. This is due to the Coriolis Effect. Tropical systems that start far in the East Pacific will invariably curve right (Northward) into cooler waters that sap them of their strength. This is made even worse by the California Current which brings cold water much father South in the East Pacific compared to other places where tropical systems tend to form.
