Eli5, why do things hurt less when you pinch the surrounding skin.

When I have like long hairs and I pluck them, if I pinch the skin around it, it doesn’t hurt as bad for example.

Perhaps the skin tissue surrounding the plucking area has got the epidermis cells at a distance from the epithelial cells of the plucking area.

I had an amazing high school psychology teacher who taught this phenomenon by kicking his shin into a desk and then lightly rubbing his shin with his hand to make the pain go away. I remember the whole class cracking up as he did it multiple times. He explained in detail why this happens, though it’s been so long I completely forgot the psychological reason. Someone please remind me, don’t let Mr. McLaughlin’s pain be in vain.

Pressure nerve signals move more quickly than some kinds of pain signals. So you feel the pressure before you feel the pain.
