ELI5. Why do we feel sore or that we are going to catch a cramp after running and jumping without a warm up vs as a kid you didn’t

As I reached my teen years and young adulthood hood I always missed when as a kid you could reach full sprint at a drop of a hat without issues. As a young adult it’s like I’ll feel sore and that I’m about to catch a cramp if I’m not properly warmed up.

A lot of it comes down to muscle elasticity and tendon mobility. As we age, our muscles become less flexible, and our tendons lose some of their water content making them stiffer as a result. Think of muscles like a rubber band. As a kid, your rubber bands are very stretchy right as soon as you want to stretch them, so you don’t need to warm them up as much unless you’re doing big things to them (like gymnastics). As an adult, that warming up is like taking an old rubber band and slowly stretching it out, so that when you want to do the things that were normal to you as a kid, you can do so without risking the rubber band breaking.
