Eli5 : Why do we fight forest fires?

Besides the obvious need to protect human life, aren’t forest fires actually healthy for the environment? A lot of plants regenerate stronger a few years after burns. There’s even numerous accounts of ancient civilizations burning crop fields for better growth.

In Florida fire officials do “controlled burns” which simulates nature. Occasionally, these cause problems; you usually do a controlled burn when winds are light to reduce the possibilty of the fire spreading, but these fires can also smolder overnight with smoke blanketing roads causing chain reaction accidents. If you see a temporary sign about smoke ahead, slow down.
