Eli5 : Why do we fight forest fires?

Besides the obvious need to protect human life, aren’t forest fires actually healthy for the environment? A lot of plants regenerate stronger a few years after burns. There’s even numerous accounts of ancient civilizations burning crop fields for better growth.

Forest fires are meant to be small things that happen every year or two that clear out the underbush. Then they hit an area that they burned recently and they fizzle out – giving animals a safe haven to escape to. That’s when it’s good for the environment. Leave it any longer and it absolutely decimates everything in it’s path and animals don’t have anywhere to run to because nothing burned recently.

That’s why in Australia we practice back-burning. Regularly burning small areas under controlled conditions so they don’t get too big. But if you don’t have the resources to do that safely, then all you can do is fight the big ones when they come along and try to salvage what you can.
