Eli5: Why do we get runny noses with colds?

Why do we get such an overproduction of mucus when we have a cold? What does it actually do? (Asked by someone who has had to blow her nose WAY too many times in the last 48h!).

Forgive me if I’m inaccurate here, I have two bio degrees but I’m a little rusty. Virus attaches to tissues in nose and throat and irritated it. Mucus helps grab the irritating virus and lock it away so it can’t hurt you anymore. The result. Lots of stuffy noses and irritated throats.
