Eli5: Why do we get the chills when we hear somebody sing

Specifically when you find the singing voice to be beautiful, I don’t know how else to put it.

Some people have an enhanced ability to experience intense emotions, so when while this doesn’t apply to everyone (less than 50% of the population rough estimate from studies) it could apply to listener and they’re experiencing what the singer is trying to convey.

Another thing that can play a role is simply volume and the sound waves effectively vibrating against your skin in a well ventilated area can create the mechanical experience of goosebumps/chills.

I have to hold back tears quite often when I hear beautiful music. It’s very emotional for me. I heard the term for it recently and can’t remember it now.

Who’s we? Got a mouse in your pocket?
