Eli5-Why do we limp and what does it help when we have a leg/ankle injury

I’m watching March madness and a player just rolled his ankle terribly. I played sports and have done it multiple times but as he was limping off it just made me wonder why our instinct is to limp and what is it really helping when we do. Thanks in advance

The instinct is not to limp.

1. The body is naturally sending pain to the damages tissues, so you are reacting to it and not putting weight there AMAP cuz pain bad.
2. You as an athlete know that your already degrading asset is damaged, possibly worth millions of losses in the end. You mentally decide to move without using the leg as little as you can.

Probably often a combination of both, though.
