Eli5: Why do we see light rays when we squint?

try to squint one more time but focus on your eyelashes this time instead of the light and i’m sure you’ll understand:)

Light is a wave and so it diffracts around objects, when you squint you are having to look through your eyelashes, these diffract light from point sources causing long spikes. This is the same process that causes [diffraction spikes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffraction_spike) in telescopes.
