The trigonometry of the viewing angle is one part of the equation.

The other part is the physical properties of an LCD screen, how they’re constructed and how they work. LCD displays work by shining a backlight onto an array of filters, that manipulate the light before it leaves out the front of the screen and hits your eye. That manipulation is what produces the image you see.

Unfortunately those filters don’t let a lot of light through at wide angles; most of it goes forwards. That’s why the screen appears dark when viewed at a wide angle. Different types of screens have different kinds of filters in them, so some have wider angles than others.
