ELI5, why do we usually have radiators under windows? Doesn’t the heat just go up then straight out the window?

Besides what has already been mentioned, another benefit is that the area of the wall where windows are located are usually unusable for furniture placement. Therefore a radiator placed there will neither be obstructed, or in the way.
