Eli5: Why does a camera have to flash and time it perfectly when it takes a picture? Can’t the light just stay on?

The way I’d actually explain it to a five year old:
It can just stay on the whole time. It’s just annoying to have a light on when you’re not using it. It gets hot, it’s a waste of batteries and no one wants to stare at a light that bright all the time.
