Eli5, Why does heat slow down a computer?

It doesn’t. Computers actually probably work better when warm.

However the computer *generates* a lot of heat as it performs calculations. And if it gets *too* hot parts can start melting. So it has a built in thermometer, and if the temp gets to high is slows or stops itself. So that it doesn’t generate anymore heat.
