There isn’t a lot of strong research in the area. But hot liquids increase blood flow, relax muscles, and can loosen phlegm and mucus leading to faster healing. As well, while all liquids imbibed increase salivation, hot drinks increase it more dramatically. Some research suggests hot liquids may also kill harmful bacteria.

When you have a sore throat, hot liquids can be more soothing because they have a comforting effect on the irritated tissues. Warm drinks can help relax the muscles in your throat, reduce inflammation, and provide relief.

On the other hand, cold liquids might momentarily numb the area, but they can also potentially constrict blood vessels, which may not be as helpful for soothing the discomfort in the long run.

It’s like using a warm compress for a sore muscle – the warmth tends to be more relaxing and calming than the temporary relief provided by cold applications.
