eli5: Why does it get louder in a crowd?

I was at a soccer match the other day and was wondering why it got so loud when everyone was singing together. The same goes for clapping. If it’s only me claps, no one could hear it, but if the whole crowd claps, it’s can get extremely loud. Is there something like a sound mass that sums up or something like this?

Exactly – but the mass is the air all around us, and sound is nothing more or less than that air moving in some way. More clapping = more air moving = greater vibration of your eardrum = more “sound” as interpreted by your brain.
