Eli5: Why does lined paper crinkle and curl up when you write on it?

I feel like the severity depends on what you’re writing with but ultimately is based on how thin most lines paper is and the fact that it’s on top of other pages.

High – pressure implements like pencils or some ball – point pens push the top page into the bottom stack causing a bend in the page. This is similar to metal workers hammering metal into a piece of lead /wood to let the base deform and form a curve in the metal.

If you want to limit this effect on your paper try using a fountain pen or a felt – tip pen (like a sharpie pen) that transfer ink on contact with no pressure. I’ve been using a pilot fountain pen for years and it has helped my handwriting as well as the paper curling. The only caveat with that is choose the right ink otherwise it’ll bleed around or through
