Eli5 Why does mobile data (4G) slow down, when WiFi network stops working, even though they both shouldn’t be related?

This is probably not the network slowing down but your phone data manager trying to use the network while repeatedly attempting to switch back to wifi. If you disable the wifi during these times you should see an increase in speeds over 4G.
