eli5: Why Does Organic Beef Seem Gamey?

If it’s because of lack of antibiotics, how does this work and why can’t we feed them something else that makes them less gamey? Also curious how aging affects it, as funk and game may not be the best combo.

Thanks in advance.

You are what you eat as they say….thats why deer is really ‘gamey’ because its from their very lean diet and food they eat whereas production beef get processed feed, alfalfa etc….more fat, more taste.

Grass fed beef tastes gamey because that’s the flavor that grazing on grass gives to animals.

A lot of grass fed beef in the US is “grain finished” meaning they switch the cattle to a grain diet to intentionally reduce the gamey flavor shortly before they are slaughtered.

The funky flavor likely means it’s healthier for you and lived a happier life, too.

As others have mentioned it’s not because of the antibiotics but because of the actual diet of the animals.

I think it is actually preferred by those producers to be a little more gamey as that is what beef “should” actually taste like, in their natural habitat cows graze. So they don’t want to change it, on the contrary they want it to have that distinct flavour from “mass produced” beef

What you’re tasting there is how beef is supposed to taste.

Cattle eat grass in a natural setting, not grain. Grain is unnatural food for them and is only used because of it’s ability to add weight and marbling to beef cattle.
