silicone objects are very similar chemically to silicone lubricants and as such they are miscible, unlike water-based lubricants. Because of this, silicone lubricants can irreversibly penetrate into the object. They can also cause plasticizers and other components to leach out of the object. Both of result in changes to the material composition and properties of the object or toy. Such effects can be avoided by using water-based lubricants which neither permeate into the PDMS network nor cause anything to leach out.
