eli5 why does sinus inflammation take so long to clear up?

Ive been having problems with my sinus (chronic sinusitis) for the last 8 months and finally had surgery 3 weeks ago after trying everything. The ear nose and throat specialist told me it can take 3 months for the inflammation to go down. Why is this, you wouldn’t expect this from an infection in your arm, what about the sinus makes it so slow to recover?

Explanation I got after cancer treatment and ops that affected my sinuses was it’s partly as you can’t really avoid using them, can’t wrap them up in a bandage, can’t put a salve on them.

Hopefully an actual clinician will be along with a better answer though 🙂
