It’s very likely that the terminals are a little corroded or rusted and the battery isn’t making good contact with the terminals, so power isn’t flowing regularly. Whacking the remote can knock some crusty bits up or shift the battery to a cleaner part of the battery terminals and make a better connection.

I always spin the batteries when they don’t seem to be powering something, and that usually gives it a little more life. So ya.
