Eli5 Why does sleeping with a fan on dry your sinus/throat out more than just breathing?

Because the air the fan provides comes from a larger area and its more dry.
If you just breathe some of the air just stays around and its more laden with water vapor so the water in your sinuses and throat doesnt evaporate as easily.
When the fan is running all that air is replaced so more water vapor gets absorbed by the air.
