ELi5: why does soda sometimes feel more thirst quenching than water?

Water is more hydrating, right? Is feeling quenched just a sugar trick?

Quenched and Satisfied are two different things. You are feeling satisfied by the sugar hit and also probably a bit of the “pain” of the carbonation, but not more hydrated.

But if you like drinking soda more than water. It only takes a couple of days to transition to a good-flavoured seltzer. I like Poland Springs Ruby Red (grapefruit seltzer) but Buble Lemon is basically Sprite without the sugar so these all are very easy water based drinks with no sugar to break the soda habit!
