Eli5 Why does stimulants cause jaw tension?

I believe most people who have done a fair dose of MDMA have experienced the jaw tension and teeth grinding that comes with it. I’ve also experienced this quite a bit with amphetamines, including the medication i’m currently prescribed. When i abused amphetamine for a while, it was so bad that i broke several teeth. I wonder what it is about stimulants that causes this?

Stimulants like MDMA and amphetamines make your brain release a lot of chemicals that make you feel really good and full of energy. These chemicals can also make your muscles more active, including the muscles in your jaw.
Imagine you are really excited about something, like going to a funfair. Your heart might beat faster, and you might start to bounce up and down without even realizing it. This is because your body is full of energy and your muscles are more active.
When you take stimulants, it’s like your body gets really, really excited and full of energy. This can make the muscles in your jaw start to move without you even realizing it, which can lead to teeth grinding and jaw tension.
Also, stimulants can make you feel a bit anxious or on edge, and sometimes when people feel that way, they clench their jaw or grind their teeth without even realizing it.
So, the combination of extra energy and feeling a bit anxious can cause your jaw muscles to work overtime and lead to teeth grinding and jaw tension. It’s important to be careful with stimulants and any other medications and to talk to a doctor if you notice any side effects like this.
