Eli5 Why Does The Calendar Not Fully Align With The Seasons

Wouldn’t it make more sense if the start of the calendar aligned with the start of a season and every season fell in consecutive months in the same year?

It used to be that way. The year started March the 1st. This was the opening of the Roman Senate after their winter brake. Other calendars in use also started the year in spring and often with a big festival, for exapmle easter. This is very natural as spring is associated with a new start, it is the start of the growing season, animals have their babies in spring and winter closed roads gets opened again. The change of the start of the year from March to January was done by the Church who wanted the start of the year to be more related to the birth of Jesus then his death.

The seasons are defined aligning with calendar months in many countries (e.g. winter is defined as consisting of December, January and February). It’s just a choice of the corresponding government or other authority institution.

It’s just the way it has grown historically.
If we were allowed to totally remake how we subdivide time, things would look very different. However, remaking it now has so many implications on so many things, it’s simply not worth it

Why should it ? What would it improve?

What about the Artic or Africa – where there are not really a summer / autumn / spring / winter …. compared to say europe.
