Wouldn’t it make more sense if the start of the calendar aligned with the start of a season and every season fell in consecutive months in the same year?

The seasons are defined aligning with calendar months in many countries (e.g. winter is defined as consisting of December, January and February). It’s just a choice of the corresponding government or other authority institution.
