There’s muscle in your stomach and intestines that cause it to contract in order to move the contents. The motion of all of your insides and the things inside them, makes noise. It actually is making noise pretty much all the time, just not loud enough for you to hear it (but your doctor can when he puts a stethoscope on your stomach!).

Sometimes, if you’re stomach is upset, or if there’s extra gas or air inside, it can make louder noises.

When you’re hungry, all of the insides tend to contract and move around more forcefully and more frequently, and since there’s nothing inside to dampen the noise, it can be quite loud as well.
