Eli5: why does US currency still have “in god we trust” written on it even though church and state are supposed to be separate?

It actually was added during the anti-communism panic in the 50s. Prior to that it wasn’t there. It shouldn’t be there, but reactionary and performative politics put it there and now you won’t really get the momentum to get it off the money with the way things are now.
