Eli5: why does US currency still have “in god we trust” written on it even though church and state are supposed to be separate?

“separation of church and state” doesn’t appear anywhere in the constitution. What it does say is
>Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
This motto doesn’t establish a religion or prohibit the free exercise thereof.
