I want to mimic the same atmosphere for a podcast but not sure how to technically explain it

For that buttery velvet public radio sound, proximity effect (experiment with microphone placement to reduce mouth sounds), high-pass, soft bass boost, compression beyond your wildest dreams, and keep your respiratory tract clear and mouth very wet.

You can buy a box to do this for about $400 or you can spend some extra time working with audacity in Audacity.
