ELI5 why is a four year degree pushed so hard here (US)? There are so many options within a year or two after high school that can pay an above average salary often with less debt. People seem to feel dumb if they don’t have the title of a bachelors or above.

not answering with this but

I went to college for a semester and hated it.

Been working construction ever since with no debt, taking vocational schooling when I need it and I love it.

The idea of a 4 year degree is just silly to me when theres so much work available in the trades, that often pay as much as a degree would.
