eli5: why is a recorded voice higher when sped up, and lower when slowed down?

The way we perceive sound is based on frequency – the more sound waves per second (or Hertz), the higher pitched the sound. When you speed up the video, you’re increasing the speed of it, which means increasing the frequency of the sound waves (faster sound needs faster frequency), therefore upping the pitch.
