eli5: why is anesthesia not applied in these cases?

Piercings and tattoos, I mean. Wouldn’t it be easy if we just applied anesthesia? I don’t know if there’s a reason why, but I do wanna know.

*Also, why isn’t anesthesia applied for IUD insertion?

Do you mean general anesthesia where they put you to sleep? No, it would not be easier, It would me much harder and more risky. General anesthesia is a serious medical procedure. It has risks and it requires specialized doctors to safely put you under, monitor you while under, and wake you up again. This all has to take place a facility that can accommodate all the equipment. This also makes it very expensive. It would be ludicrous to undergo general anesthesia for something like a piercing or tattoo where the pain is easily tolerable.
